Carmel’s star is rising. Money Magazine recently named Carmel #1 on its list of the “10 Best Places to Retire in 2022.” Within the past five years, Carmel has also been named the #1 city to live in on USA Today’s list of “most livable” cities.

As you browse Carmel homes for sale, you may wonder what it would be like to retire in Carmel. You may be wondering what you would do with your time or what activities or attractions are nearby. What’s it like to live in the area? We want to help you imagine what your life could be like here. We think you’re going to be thrilled that you chose to spend your retirement in the area.

Below are seven reasons to retire in Carmel.

Weather

The summers are mild in Carmel, and while the winters are cold, they are not unmanageable. Average temperatures peak in July and August at 85° and 84° Fahrenheit, respectively. In January, the average temperature is 35°, which is the lowest average of any month. You’ll love the spring and fall months — the average temperature from March to May is 62°, and the average temperature from September to November is 65°. You can expect 185 days of sunshine and about five days less of snow than the national average.

Access to health care

The city has three local hospitals (Ascension St. Vincent Carmel, Franciscan Health Carmel, and IU Health North Hospital), offering both inpatient and outpatient services. The city also has over 350 primary care physicians who can help in non-emergency settings. In other words, Carmel is a great place to retire because there is access to an expansive system of excellent health care.

Local events

There will always be something to do in this bustling suburb. In addition to the wonderful parks, arts districts, and shopping centers, the city has several special events scheduled throughout the year. Check out the Carmel Farmers' Market for your fresh produce and locally-made goods. The city also puts on an annual German Christmas market, or Christkindlmarkt, a local favorite that features an ice skating rink and plenty of booths to find the best German or German-inspired gifts. If you like to sip wine while enjoying beautiful and unique art, attend Art of Wine in July.

You’ll also want to put the Carmel International Arts Festival on your calendar. It’s a large festival that takes place in September and brings in more than 100 artists (across nine mediums) to share their unique, exemplary art with the city. The organization’s mission is to educate through the arts.

Car enthusiasts will be especially interested in Artmobilia’s Joker Road Rally in April. There are even more upcoming events in Carmel you’ll want to check out!

Local activities

The city has its own symphony orchestra, with performances and special events scheduled throughout the year. The Center for the Performing Arts features various musical and theater acts. The city also has several art councils and museums to visit, such as the Museum of Miniature Houses, where over 100,000 visitors from dozens of countries have enjoyed the fine-scale miniatures on display.

Visitors and locals love the Carmel City Center for its shopping and dining options. The center boasts everything from great retail stores to ice cream and even some fun events, like Spring Sip & Shop.

The Carmel Arts and Design District is also a local favorite.  Located in Old Town Carmel, there are art galleries to visit, shops, restaurants, and the World’s Smallest Children’s Art Gallery, featured in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1999. The city may feature exhibits dedicated to small things, but I promise you, the fun you’ll have will be big!

Outdoor resources

As we mentioned earlier, the weather in Carmel is lovely, so you’ll probably want to spend lots of time outside. Carmel has several great places to enjoy the weather and nature, such as the 159-acre Central Park, which differs from the park of the same name in Manhattan by allowing residents to feel like they are entirely alone in nature. Carmel also boasts the 15.7-mile Monon Greenway that runs into downtown Indianapolis. You’ll also love Coxhall Gardens, a gorgeous and eclectic outdoor space. Boasting a Children’s Garden and twin 90-feet bell towers, Coxhall Gardens is a popular wedding venue that is also family-friendly.
